How to Comment a Picture or GIF on TikTok
Open the comments, tap Add comment, tap Upload photo, pick a photo and post. Photo comments are only available in some regions, which is the usual reason the button is missing. GIFs are a different story, covered below.

How do you comment a photo on TikTok?
In the TikTok app, per TikTok's comments help page:
- Open the post and tap Comments.
- Tap Add comment.
- Tap Upload photo and choose a photo. The first time, the app asks for access to your photos.
- Tap Post comment.
Why can't you comment pictures on TikTok?
TikTok says photo comments are available in select regions, so if there is no Upload photo button, the likeliest reason is simply that it has not reached your account. Two other things to check:
- Update the app. New comment features arrive with new versions.
- The creator's settings. If they have limited comments to followers or friends, or turned comments off, you cannot comment at all, with or without a photo.
Can you comment a GIF on TikTok?
Some accounts can. TikTok has not documented GIF comments on its Help Center; reports from late 2024 describe GIFs being tested with a small number of users, reached from the emoji button in the comment box. If your comment box has no GIF option, there is no setting that adds one.
TikTok's own stickers help page covers stickers in direct messages, not comments, so it does not answer this either.
What else can you add to a TikTok comment?
TikTok announced three more comment formats on 3 September 2026:
- Photo carousels: up to nine photos in one comment, rolling out globally over the month after the announcement. Live Photos are available globally.
- Voice comments: up to 60 seconds, rolling out to accounts aged 18 and over.
- Comment polls: up to five options, added by the creator from the comment box on their own video.
