How do you get the transcript of a TikTok video?
Copy the video's link (Share, then Copy link in the app, or the address bar on the web), paste it into the box above and press Get transcript. The transcript appears under the video's card, one line per caption, each with the time it starts at.
Switch Timestamps off to read it as running text. Copy transcript copies whichever version is on screen; .txt downloads the same thing as a file, and .srt and .vtt download subtitle files with the full start and end time of every line.
It works on public videos only, from any phone or computer, without the TikTok app and without signing in.
How do you extract the script from a TikTok video?
Paste the video's link above: the transcript is the script, every word spoken in the video in the order it is said. Switch Timestamps off and copy it to get the script as one block of text, ready to paste into a document or a notes app.
This extracts the script a video already has. It does not write a new one: what comes out is what the person on screen said, which is what you want when studying how a video is paced, quoting it, or turning your own video into a written post.
Where does the transcript come from?
From TikTok's own captions whenever the video has them, which most videos with talking do: they are the auto-generated captions TikTok adds to speech, or the ones the creator added or edited. The transcript is that caption track, word for word.
When a video has no captions and is 2 minutes long or less, its audio is transcribed by AI instead. The result is labelled as an AI transcript, and longer videos without captions are not sent to AI at all.
Either way, the words are only as good as the speech recognition behind them. Accents, mixed languages, slang, names and anything said under loud music can come out wrong, and the transcript repeats the mistake faithfully. Check a line against the video before you quote it.
Does TikTok have a transcript feature?
Not one you can copy. TikTok shows auto-generated captions over a video one line at a time, and its Help Center documents no way to see or copy them as a whole transcript, which is the gap this tool fills. To turn the captions on or off while watching, per TikTok's accessibility page for viewers:
- Tap the Share button on the side of the video.
- Tap Captions at the bottom; you may need to scroll across to find it.
- Turn Show captions on or off. The option only appears on videos that have captions.
How do you get better captions on your own TikToks?
Pick the right language before you post. TikTok generates captions for uploaded videos with speech recognition, in the language chosen under More options, then Select video language on the post screen. A wrong choice is the usual reason a transcript comes out as gibberish. That and the editing steps below are from TikTok's accessibility page for creators.
To fix captions after posting, open the video, tap a caption, then tap Edit captions, change or remove lines, and tap Save. Fixing them on TikTok fixes them for every viewer, and for any transcript made from the video afterwards.
Which TikTok videos can't be transcribed?
Anything with no speech to read, or nothing public to read it from:
| Not transcribed | Why |
|---|---|
| Videos with no talking | Music, sound effects or text on screen give the captions and the AI nothing to write down. |
| Videos over 2 minutes without captions | Too long for the AI fallback. A long video with TikTok's captions is transcribed in full. |
| Private videos | Nothing on a private video is public, so there is nothing to read. |
| Photo posts | A carousel has a soundtrack but no speech of its own. |
| LIVE streams | A LIVE is not a posted video. See what can and can't be done with a LIVE. |
What can you do with a TikTok transcript?
Quote a video accurately, find the moment something was said in a long one, or turn your own videos into a caption, a blog post, a newsletter or subtitles for a re-edit somewhere else. A transcript is also the quickest way to follow a video with the sound off.
A transcript of someone else's video is still their words. Quote it with credit and a link to the video; do not republish it as your own content.
What are SRT and VTT files?
Plain-text subtitle files. Each caption gets a start and end time to the millisecond, and its text; SRT numbers the captions as well, and VTT (WebVTT) is the format web video players read. YouTube Studio and most video editors import SRT, so that is the one to use when you are re-posting your own video somewhere that does not caption it for you. Use VTT for a video you put on a web page.
Is the transcript generator private?
Yes. There is no login, so your TikTok account is never involved and the creator is not told you looked. The transcript is fetched by this site's server, sent to your browser, and not stored anywhere once the page has it. The copy and the downloads are built in your browser and never uploaded. The privacy policy has the details.
